JPIII
The
latest Jurassic Park installment opened yesterday. A lean,
fast-paced movie with plenty o' righteous dinosaur action. Can't go
too far off course when you put dinosaurs fightin' dinosaurs
and eatin' guys and airplanes and all up there on the big
screen. Great sound, good
effects, decent movie.
The
Chain Scale was a might harsh
on JPIII, as it doesn't really accommodate "monster movies"
very well (though we did sport 'er an
extra three chains for dino vs. dino combat). |

Makes
a man think perhaps a slight Chain Scale revision is in
order, eh? Flesh it
out a bit - better define some of the gray areas...

The
Dream is Always the Same.
The
numbers
are in and the outlook is grim. Final
Fantasy: The Spirits Within didn't do as well as expected
at the box-office this weekend, despite the early Wednesday
opening. We normally don't offer much attention to the weekend
take of movies, but had heard that if this animated jewel did
well, we could expect Square
to crank out a couple sequels. Apparently their movie didn't click with domestic audiences. Putrid mindless
drek like "Legally
Blonde" over an innovative, seminal work of CGI
splendor? Main stream audiences. Fah.
Anyway...
our friend the Final
Fantasy website is hosting a new post-release trailer.

Fantasy
Becomes Reality
Final
Fantasy: The Spirits Within finally opened this past Wednesday.
The verdict? Right on the mark.
A glorious piece o' film-making. The visuals were, as
expected, jaw-dropping - every bit the lush and detailed moving
canvas the trailers had foretold. Rather startling, however, was
how lamely the "actors" lip movements were executed.
Poorly synched (though you become desensitized to it quickly).
Also think that casting well-known actors in the various roles
was a mistake - disconcerting to hear Steve Buscemi's voice not
partnered with that familiar weasely face...
Not too many favorable reviews of the storyline out there. We
found it difficult to follow any sort of plot beneath the
fantastic Elliot Goldenthal score and tear-inducing visuals. The
story was just a vehicle to move the audience through the
scenes, on to the next set of backgrounds and visual effects
(which was dandy by me). Reckon a second viewing is in order to
really make a call on the merits of the narrative.
Sci-Fi
CGI? Oh, lordy - the Chain Scale
is indeed very kind to these types of films: |

Chains: 14.5 |
Ebert
penned a review that is pretty much spot-on right
over here - though I wouldn't read it if you are one of
those "spoiler" sensitive types. |

Took in
the fireworks this past weekend. Tried photographing some of 'em with the
mighty G1,
which turned out to be more difficult than it looks (likely due
to my suckitude). Some of the better results:
Those
last couple are of The Nephew with one of those cool giant
sparklers. Amazing how far Sparkler technology has advanced since I
was a kidlet...
